Web Developer Interview Experience - Mountain View, California

July 1, 2013

Positive ExperienceGot Offer

Process

Two technical phone screens and a full day on-site.

This was probably the easiest interview I have ever encountered. That is likely because I was very well-versed in the technologies they used, understood all the pitfalls of being a full-stack developer, and everyone was very friendly.

Questions

How do you estimate the "value" of the work that you do?

How does that help the company you work for, and how does it align with your career goals?

Pros: Working for LinkedIn has been an awesome experience. Their hiring process for development is top-notch. The tools and practices are well embraced. The management is empathetic and understanding towards a true work-hard, play-hard mentality. The care for employees and their lifestyles is the gold standard among companies in the Silicon Valley. The work is engaging, and there is always someone around to answer your questions when you need something. There is a strong amount of ownership and transparency, resulting in a collaboration that isn't possessive.

Cons: Due to the rapid growth and iteration, there tends to be a bit too much compartmentalization. Work on cross-training and don't abstract too much.

Pros: Aside from all the shiny things (free food, great compensation, and a very fun and inviting environment), this company has made me feel welcome. The collaborative environment here at LinkedIn inspires relationship building and spurs creativity. Because of it, I understand how each team contributes, why each is important, and how I can optimize to be a better contributor myself. I feel encouraged to grow, but never pressured to overexert myself. This is a company that preaches and practices good work-life balance.

Cons: I do feel like there is a ceiling at LinkedIn, but it is one that exists at any established company. It saddens me to know that if I want to make something more out of my career, like break into a steady, high six-figure range or make a few million dollars, I'm probably going to have to move on to a different company.
