The only con I have seen so far is an over-emphasis on doing everything ourselves. There is a history of developing technology in-house, which sometimes leads to incredible technology like Kafka. However, in other cases, this is a barrier to getting up to speed and can result in tools and technology that don't compete with some industry standards.
