The initial assessment involved a FaceTime call with one team member, followed by an on-site visit for five meetings with pairs of team members. I also received a challenging programming assignment.
The programming assignment was extremely difficult, requiring significant coding, troubleshooting, debugging, and parsing skills. I had never encountered a homework assignment that asked for such complex features for parsing a log. I was able to complete it in approximately 10 hours over several days.
Interviews with the SRE team were great. They indicated that my skillset was needed, and they were missing a lot of automation and containerization. I was able to answer all questions posed.
Interviews with the data team focused on architecture. However, they struggled to understand the architecture I designed because it differed from their current approach. This theme recurred throughout the rest of the interviews.
I often received confused looks when I proposed cloud-native and Kubernetes-based solutions, as these are not currently in their technology stack. In more than one instance, the "correct" answer provided turned out to be a hand-built or custom "roll-your-own" solution within AWS, rather than utilizing established configuration management or Kubernetes concepts.
