Process

The HR called for a basic HR round. She was friendly and explained about the work culture at MathWorks, their hiring process, and what to expect once hired.

She asked about my GPA, visa status, how I manage my time, if I have ever led any projects, and if I have had any differences with teammates, etc.

She also asked me to describe a project in non-technical language, my programming language of choice, and if I am familiar with MathWorks products.

Questions

  • Embedded

What is an RTOS, a soft RTOS, and a hard RTOS?

  • How is it implemented?
  • What is priority inversion?
  • How to resolve priority inversion?
  • Different types of scheduling policies (I explained Round Robin and multi-feedback queue).

C

  • Difference between malloc and calloc, syntax of each, and how calloc is used.
  • Inline functions and their use.
  • Difference between #define and const.
  • Some code that changes the value of const and asking what would happen.

MATLAB

  • Two matrices of size 3x3 and 4x3: how will you concatenate them, and when the sizes are the same?
  • What is the difference between A^2 and A.^2?
  • How will you plot points (2,11), (2,22), (3,33) on a plane marked with a green star? (These represent X-Y coordinates).
  • What is the meaning of the operator ~?

C++

  • What is a copy constructor?

Class student { char *name; };

  • What happens when you initialize student s1;?

  • What default methods does the compiler substitute?

  • What is the difference between Student s1 = s2; and s1 = s2;? (The first will invoke the copy constructor, and the second will invoke the assignment operator).

  • Let's say class student has s1, s2, and s3 objects. Is s1 = s2 + s3; legal in C++?

Other

  • What is a hash table?
  • How would you implement an algorithm to find duplicates in an array? What is its time complexity if the array is sorted?
