Senior Android Developer Interview Experience - Vietnam

Process

A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn, and I accepted to take part in the interview.

The first round was a phone interview. The interviewer asked about myself, my working experience, my leadership, and some multiple-choice questions on Android (AsyncTask, Activity lifecycle, Services, etc.). I was then moved on to the next round. He was very nice.

The second round was about coding. At the beginning of this round, I was asked to answer some Android questions in 5 minutes:

  • AlarmManager vs JobScheduler
  • Parcelable vs Serializable
  • What causes ANR and how to prevent it.

Then, I was asked to resolve two easy problems, which can be found on LeetCode:

  • Merge two sorted arrays
  • Find the k smallest elements in an array

The onsite round included 4 interviews:

  • Two coding interviews focusing on linked lists, hash tables, and binary trees. If you rehearse carefully all problems, especially binary trees on LeetCode, you can pass them. I didn't practice well. I coded some binary tree problems on LeetCode with a Facebook tag, except for one. The interview question went into that specific problem. That was very unfortunate. I saw the problem but didn't try to code it. I also gave the accepted solution, but it took time to think and explain to the interviewers. They seemed to want me to give the solution as soon as possible.
  • One behavioral question.
  • One system design interview: I was asked to design the Android side of Messenger. I received positive feedback in this round, as I had implemented similar applications before. I think the HR tried to arrange a suitable interviewer and interview questions that matched my CV. They were very kind and really wanted me to pass, but I failed because of the coding interviews. I felt very ashamed because they were very good and dedicated.
