Process

A lecture was given at our university by Facebook employees. They provided a link to apply online on the Facebook site. I applied, and a recruiter contacted me in less than a week. She was very friendly and flexible, so we arranged a Skype interview on a date that worked for me.

During the first interview, the interviewer was about half an hour late. He apologized, and I said it was okay. The interview went fine. I was asked two questions about data structures, one of which was from the book I was preparing from. The next day, I received an email from the recruiter stating they wanted another interview. Once again, they worked around my schedule. Throughout the process, my recruiter was very prompt in sending emails.

The second interview went a bit worse than the first, far from perfect. I was asked two questions again, and the interviewer didn't give me much time to think. For example, the interviewer pointed out errors in my code before I had finished. After I said I was done with the code, I was asked if I could improve it. I did make it better, but I was given a hint before I started coding, even though I likely would have arrived at that solution. I suppose the interviewer wanted the interview to proceed more quickly than I was comfortable with. Regardless, I coded the improved solution. Then, I was told there existed an even better solution, and I didn't know how to achieve it. I mentioned I would need to think about it, but we were almost out of time, so we stopped. I was also told I could expect to hear from my recruiter within a week.

My recruiter, who had been very responsive up to this point, did not contact me at all. I was disappointed, thinking I hadn't passed the interview. I waited a little over a week and then emailed to ask if there was any news. The next day, she responded, apologizing for not contacting me sooner, citing issues with the recruiting tool. Later, I was informed that I had passed. I suspect I wouldn't have gotten the offer if I hadn't followed up with my recruiter, so don't be afraid to do so. I debated sending that email myself.

Questions

The interview questions were okay. All the topics were what I expected and what they said they were looking for: data structures and a bit of algorithms.
