Pros
  • Pay is high.
  • Working remotely from anywhere you want.
  • It's a good career, especially if you can manage your expenses well and save the money you earn.
  • Be careful with your money; it is a nice wage but will not last forever.
  • You can work one year and with the money saved, live 5-10 years in Asia.
Cons

To get there, you need to do many years (for me, 3-4 years) of open-source contributions.

It does not last long (I worked for them for 1 year).

Most of the employees are 22-25 years old, fresh from university. They have a strong connection with the university. If you don't go to MIT or Harvard or similar, it's hard to get in.

Lately, even my colleagues from MIT and Harvard University ended up getting laid off when they switched from Facebook to Meta. So, I would not go do 5 years at MIT and spend $500,000 USD to get a job like this one (but they quickly got new jobs, so most of them are okay).

Advice to Management

The management is doing well, trying to make the company smaller and focusing on delivering better new products, but I don't believe they will create anything valuable.

  • A big tech company like Microsoft cannot become a startup.
  • Meta is becoming more like Microsoft (VR was something Microsoft tried before), rather than Google or Amazon.
  • Like Microsoft, all their products have a bad impact on people's lives. For example, Google created Wear OS, which has lots of nice apps for doing fitness and keeping on your diet. Apple also has Apple TV, with fitness classes, etc. Meta, instead, creates these social networks that are the main reason people are not productive or happy in their lives. I believe Meta does not have a positive impact on the world. They mostly try to hype things, follow trends, and monetize on products that do not positively impact people's lives.
  • For the reason above, I believe the company is not doing well. Stock prices don't matter; products are what will ensure the company is profitable in the long term.
