Pros
  • Pays well.
  • Perks (especially food for on-site).
Cons

Don’t expect to work on cutting-edge data engineering problems. The role largely focuses on analytics and ETL tasks due to Meta’s highly developed infrastructure. Data Engineers are often seen more as support staff for analytics than core engineers.

Following the layoffs, Data Engineers are required to support multiple cross-functional teams at once. With no clearly defined niche, concerns about workload and bandwidth are frequently ignored.

Team placement matters. Be cautious when choosing a manager—those with limited experience may struggle with the demands of the role, leading to disorganization while maintaining a façade of effectiveness.
