Smart people, hard work
really really smart people if you get on the right team. Some teams are full of coasters and people doing busy work, but it's easy to figure out.
It seems like promotion is fairly available.
Watch out for teams that are completely homogenous – everyone from the same country, everyone speaks the same language, etc. Also, if your manager doesn't champion you, or you do not have a mentor, you will not be promoted. Also, expect long hours.
