Associate Software Engineer Interview Experience - Seattle, Washington

Process

I had a final onsite interview at Microsoft, which consisted of four rounds.

I had a great experience with the 1st and 4th interviewers. They seemed genuinely interested in my interview and were continuously interacting with me, as if they were actively listening.

However, I did not have a great experience with the 2nd and 3rd interviewers. It felt like they weren't interested in conducting the interview at all.

The 2nd interviewer had his baby on his lap during our session. While I understand the current circumstances, he was continuously on mute. When he did unmute, there was a lot of background noise, and it seemed like he couldn't hear me, my thought process, or anything I was saying. He didn't reply to anything, which made it appear as though he wasn't listening and was unhelpful.

Regarding the 3rd interviewer, he was very language-specific and requested that I code in Java. After assigning the coding question, he didn't explain what I needed to do or the core of the problem. There was a pin-drop silence, and it felt like I was talking to myself for 15-20 minutes. I observed him on his phone throughout this time. He also wasn't listening to me, didn't respond, and was unhelpful.

Finally, he asked me a networking question, which I hadn't been told to prepare for. When I stated I didn't know much about it, he ended the interview, which had only been 30 minutes long, not the full 45 minutes. It seemed he was not at all interested in conducting my interview and didn't want to listen to anything I had to say.

I am truly disappointed with this interview experience and, regrettably, did not expect this level of professionalism from Microsoft.
