Game/Language Tester Interview Experience - United Kingdom

November 15, 2015

Process

A lady asked me to fill out a form with my personal details and then asked me to play "Call of Duty." I had never played before and got stuck on several quests, but it didn't seem to bother the interviewer much. I was then asked to translate a paragraph from Mandarin to English, as the position I applied for is Language Tester (testing games in foreign languages). The overall interview was quite easy.

Microsoft Work Experiences

Great brand, great company

Cloud Solution Architect • Current Employee

Reading, England, United Kingdom

Pros: Work environment, high caliber of colleagues, learning is constant, and the job doesn't get boring. Progression isn't just possible; it's encouraged by your manager.

Cons: Most of the UK roles have a sales component to the job. All the engineering and most of the creative roles are in the US. It's hard to switch off sometimes and get the right work-life balance.

Pros: OK salary, flexible working hours, and can WFH if you discuss with the manager. In my team, most people WFH 2/5 days. Projects can be exciting, with good work-life balance.

Cons: But there's a lot of bureaucracy that comes with being part of a large company (100k+ people), adhering to processes, etc. So, keep that in mind. There was a salary freeze a while ago, and that's made people annoyed, as well as the pay compression between newer graduate hires and people with multiple years of experience.
