Interview Process

Coding Assessment: An initial technical coding challenge to evaluate problem-solving skills, algorithmic thinking, and code quality.
Recruiting Coordinator Call: A discussion covering background, role expectations, logistics, and cultural fit.
Five Onsite Interviews:
- Coding Interview #1: A live problem-solving session focused on data structures, algorithms, and writing clean, efficient code.
- System Design Interview: Designing a scalable system, discussing architecture decisions, trade-offs, performance, reliability, and testing strategies.
- Lunch Interview / Technical Conversation: An informal discussion covering technical depth, past experience, collaboration style, and real-world engineering challenges.
- Coding Interview #2: Another hands-on coding session, often emphasizing edge cases, testing strategy, performance considerations, and code maintainability.
- Coding & Technical Discussion (Extended Conversation): A deeper technical discussion including whiteboard coding, design reasoning, debugging approaches, optimisation strategies, and explaining concepts clearly and concisely (30+ technical terms, concepts, and trade-offs).

Questions

Two Sum (variant): Given an array of integers, return indices of two numbers that add up to a target.
Longest Substring Without Repeating Characters: Sliding window problem. Explain time complexity clearly.
Merge Intervals: Given overlapping intervals, merge them efficiently.
Rotate Matrix (in-place): Rotate an N x N matrix by 90 degrees without extra space.

Great work-life balance, family benefits, but hard to level up

Pros: In my current role right now, here are the pros, which I can also see pretty much from our sister groups: * Awesome work-life balance: I never felt pressured to work beyond my work hours and I can always take a break (long and short) to recoup well-being. * Flexible: As long as you deliver results on time, nobody cares where you are and what you do during the day. * Resources availability: You're in one of the biggest companies in the world, and this should be a given. * Great benefits: My fave is the backup care (they've increased the hours for child care under Bright Horizon significantly after Covid) and the $1200 well-being allowance. * Diverse and inclusive: What you've read are all true!

Cons: Getting promoted is tough. It's not enough that you deliver but you're expected to, and keep your skip manager informed about this. This is because your direct manager is busy with his own leveling-up. In my first 3 years there, our direct manager did not even introduce us to our skip manager.

Pros: Prior to 2023, the culture here was excellent. Very team-oriented, growth mindset, heavy emphasis on work-life balance and personal growth. Microsoft seemed to truly care about its employees. Plenty of perks as well, including gifts, generous bonuses, and annual raises.

Cons: They just keep taking things away. It started with the switch to "unlimited" PTO, then announcing 10,000 layoffs, then removing perks, then the most devastating blow (so far): no annual raises at all for full-time employees. Meanwhile, we're expected to still complete work at an increased rate, with less people (because of layoffs) and for less money.
