The interview was short, about 45 minutes. It was very convenient for me since it happened on our campus. I had an interviewer who worked on the Skype team in Stockholm. He was very open-minded and easy-going, and made me feel good throughout the time.

Pros: The company still attracts and retains good engineering talent. The benefits program is outstanding.
The company still has an extremely strong presence in the PC/desktop market. Very good compensation.
Cons: Microsoft is no longer seen as a "hot" place to work, so the concentration of top-flight engineering talent is less dense than it used to be. Senior management has shown confusion with its business strategy over the last decade, having difficulty shipping Vista and always playing catch-up with Google. Innovation is limited. The company is slow-moving and can take a long time to get anything interesting done. Size can be stifling.

Huge variability in work

Pros: Lots of friendly, helpful co-workers.
Microsoft is such a large company that there are opportunities to work on a huge variety of projects, languages, and environments.
Wonderful work-life balance. Everyone is very understanding if you have to take a few hours off here and there for family or other non-work reasons.
Cons: Management often seemed distant; you would meet with your manager for 30 minutes each week, then not see them again until the next week.
A lot of time is eaten up with email, meetings, work tracking, etc., which can leave little time for dev work.
Due to the company's massive size, you can end up assigned to a dead-end project, a poor manager, etc., and forgotten about.

Pros: Benefits are fantastic, great for folks at any age.
My area of the company was also very friendly and sociable, so the environment was nice.
Cons: Layoffs happen. Your impact feels small, even when the scale is on the larger size.
