Software Development Engineer Interview Experience - Redmond, Washington

Process

Emailed a university recruiter, got a phone screen, and then an all-expenses-paid invite to Redmond to interview in person.

The phone screen was mostly behavioral questions with the occasional technical question and one puzzle:

Presented with 3 baskets, one filled with apples, one with oranges, and one with a mix of both, each falsely labeled, can you devise a strategy to correctly label all 3 if allowed to choose one basket and be given a single random piece of whatever's inside?

(The answer: yes, choose the one falsely labeled "both" to determine its true label, then work backwards to get the other two).

The in-person interview consisted of me going from building to building, interviewing with a bunch of different people one-on-one. It was 25% interviewing and 75% answering a coding question.

Wish they had me interview with groups I would've been a better fit for; might've improved my chances.

Questions

  1. Create a queue (enqueue and dequeue methods) using stacks as your only storage method.

  2. Build a binary tree from an inorder and preorder traversal pair.

  3. Find where two linked lists converge in O(n) time and O(1) memory. The linked lists are guaranteed to be valid and to converge at some point.

  4. Print duplicates in an array. You may either print duplicate values many times or just once as they're discovered.
