Pros
  • Numerous opportunities to work on a variety of projects, technologies, and ideas.
  • Great C-suite leadership, especially Satya Nadella and Phil Spencer.
  • Bright minds and friendly people.
  • Azure is a great product.
  • Excellent benefits.
Cons
  • Bureaucratic and extremely slow. You will face resistance trying to work across team boundaries.
  • Middle management culture focused primarily on how they are perceived by their higher ups.
  • Customer obsession is talked about a lot, but not actually practiced. Windows 10 and 11 are prime examples.
  • These cultural problems are deeply rooted, and middle management stubbornly holds on to their "old ways."
Advice to Management
  • Embrace the discomfort of owning failures instead of ignoring them, especially when talking to your higher-ups.
  • Actually listen to customers instead of trying to force things on them.
  • Resist the false comfort of bureaucracy.
