Pros

The work environment was excellent, the projects were fascinating, and almost everyone I worked with was exceptional.

Cons

Internal politics, the horrible stack ranking mechanism, and frequent reorgs often got in the way of useful work.

An insular culture and ridiculous guidelines and legal hurdles made use of, and contribution to, open source projects difficult and painful.

Advice to Management

Embrace open source more fully and place a much higher priority on interface and product stability for external developers. When maintaining large-scale, multi-platform software, keeping the Microsoft versions running properly was always the most time-consuming and expensive. Satya is doing a great job, but more can be done.
