Pros

The culture is changing and rewards collaboration and helping out your teammates, not just yourself. This is a huge improvement.

The hackathon opportunity is fun.

Cons

You will likely work on legacy tech that isn’t all that exciting or “modern”. Many large, successful services are maintained by thousands of engineers toiling away on an ancient, monolithic codebase.

Making changes takes a lot of time to get to production due to over-engineered, paranoid levels of gates and flights.

It’s not a web app running in the cloud; it is the cloud.

Advice to Management

Find a way to create an exciting workplace for developers who want to use the latest modern development tools. We build great tech for customers to use on Azure, but our own codebases and engineering systems, especially deployment, are just painful to work with and supported by the blood, sweat, and tears of on-call engineers being paged.
