There were also lots of interest groups that made it a fun place.
The company is really large. When I left Microsoft, there were 11 managers in-between me and the CEO, and I had gone through 2 reorgs.
It's probably impossible, but flattening the structure is a laudable goal. The company has changed a lot in the last 5 years, so this all may be useless.
