The pay is great, very nice people. Almost anything you want to work on in the technical space is available there, so switching around doesn't require switching companies.
Sometimes Microsoft can't commit to funding a project internally, but will turn around and spend 100X to buy a startup that did the same thing a year later.
New VPs like to kill the previous VPs' initiatives, like a lion taking over a pride and killing the cubs. They want to be seen as the source of the vision and leadership, not a babysitter of someone else's idea, even if that idea was brilliant.
