Microsoft is so big, and you can move around until you find the right team for you. Your experience at that point really just depends on the team you are in.
On most teams, I noticed that there are only one of two ways to get promoted:
You can't just quietly do your work and work harder in order to get promoted. Unless you ask your manager for a promotion, you won't get one or even be considered for one.
