Process
The process was very streamlined.
After an initial conversation with a recruiter, I had a technical interview, which included questions about myself and my resume, followed by a LeetCode problem.
After passing the technical interview, I moved on to a four-round technical interview, including systems design, an HR-based interview, LeetCode, and finally the data science interview.
During the entire process, I was provided information about the team and the company. I overall felt as though it was a great place to work.
MongoDB places great importance on the well-being and growth of its employees, which I liked. The team and interviewers were also extremely friendly.

Fast growth provides challenges

Pros: There are so many things that need to be done with the high growth rate of the company that nobody is pigeon-holed in just one place or one just one type of job.
Flexible hours and vacation are great but underused by many.
People are happy to hear your ideas and discuss them. As an open-source company, there is no limitation to what you can do on the internet with MongoDB.
Cons: Like any growing company, there are more challenges along the way. These include:
* Lack of organization, responsibilities, definition, and roles.
* Trouble with building effective communication channels internally (between groups and departments).
* Lots of new employees which need to learn/train before being effective.
* Holding work quality high.
* Professionalism.
* Overworked and under-acknowledged employees.
* Providing structure for professional growth internally.

Pros: Truly collegial engineering culture, backed up by "no jerks" hiring. Lots of opportunity for taking ownership and growing in responsibility. Challenging problems to work on. Tremendous market adoption and post-IPO growth rate. Lots of management transparency. Excellent work/life balance if you want it. Relatively little politics.
Cons: Decision-making can be process-heavy. Product management is uneven and often too influential. Despite a big SaaS business, SRE/DevOps capabilities seem immature. Performance review/promotion processes are opaque and subjective. Some departments are more insular and tribal than others. Rapid growth has led to many inexperienced managers. Despite genuine efforts, the company has struggled to improve diversity, particularly in technical leadership roles.

Pros: - Lots of opportunity for lateral and vertical movement.
- A general focus by management on what the company can do for your career.
- Many very smart people who are happy to mentor or help you grow.
- Autonomy as an engineer to work however fits you best.
- Opportunity to work with and on exciting technologies.
- Great work-life balance.
Cons: - Open office, if that's not your thing.
- Engineering focused around the Midtown Manhattan office. Remote is becoming more and more viable, however.
- Still some growing pains as the company is expanding rapidly, such as channels for cross-team collaboration that are in their creation stages.
