Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - Remote

Process

I interviewed for the position of a remote Senior Software Engineer on the Provisioner team. I underwent many technical interviews, lasting well over a month in all.

In one of the interviews, an interviewer told me that I could intentionally corrupt an email address to store it in a database. I disagreed with this workaround, as I consider user data to be sacrosanct.

I received an offer of USD 175K plus a 10% annual bonus. I attempted to negotiate a higher base, but they refused. The equity component felt too watered down and potentially subject to further dilution as time passed.

Unfortunately, the offer letter I received had multiple legal concerns that pose risks to the employee. The company was entirely unwilling to make simple adjustments I requested, or even to provide clarifications, and rescinded the offer.

Specifically, the following were unfair points in the offer letter:

  • There was no mention of the position being remote. This poses a liability to the employee, as the employer can suddenly change their mind and require employees to be present in the office. If the employee does not then come to the office, the employer can falsely but legally claim that the employee quit voluntarily, leading to the employee losing severance and unemployment benefits.

  • The sign-on bonus agreement was written such that even if the employer terminated employment in the first year, the sign-on bonus could potentially be clawed back from the employee. This was not written verbatim, but it was legally qualifiable from the way the clause was structured.

  • The employer effectively reserved the right to make downward adjustments to an employee's employment status, such as a demotion, transfer, and a salary reduction. Again, this was not written verbatim, but the way the clause was worded, all of these became legally permissible. None of these is acceptable because they are ploys that can be used to subsequently deny benefits.

  • I was asked to sign that I would agree to the handbook and arbitration agreements without even being able to read them first. I requested that I be able to read them first, together with the offer letter, but it was denied. As it is, arbitration agreements are a means to suppress the rights of employees, but I was willing to go along with it if only I could read it first.

  • At the time of termination of employment, there was a requirement asking me to meet with company employees. I asked that this be changed to note that the meetings would be conducted remotely, since this was, after all, a remote position.

In summary, due to the sketchy nature of the offer letter, I advise against interviewing with this firm.
