Deep Learning Alliance Manager Interview Experience - San Jose, California

Process

All other interviewers were great.

Unfortunately, the talent acquisition person ruined the experience. His first email required me to accept the offer within 48 hours, otherwise he would move on to the next candidate. This was not only rude but also felt like a threat, which shocked me.

He then asked for my salary expectation and insisted on a phone call, even though I said I preferred email. During the phone call, he brought up the threat of "...otherwise we will move on to the next candidate" twice.

When pushed for my expected salary, I asked him to provide a range. He said there was no range and instead drilled me for a specific number. The whole process with him felt like a battle. I felt much more nervous and uncomfortable talking to him. No other interviewer made me feel so uncomfortable.

He continued to drill into my home address, asking about its price, square footage, and number of bathrooms, seemingly to lowball my needed salary in the Bay Area.

I think he was going too far. He also asked how my current company calculated promotion bonuses. When I said I didn't know, he called it "dubious" and said he was "confused" since I should know the equation for the bonus calculation. I was offended because there was nothing wrong with not caring about my current bonus formula.

Overall, he has been aggressive and not based on trust or good faith from the very beginning. I had a great experience talking to all the other interviewers and HR staff. However, I had such a bad experience with this unprofessional salary negotiator that I started to doubt if I liked the company, if the company would treat me as he did, and if the company's benefit system would be as aggressive and pushy as he was.

If you look at Glassdoor, recruiters are a top dissatisfaction point for Nvidia. I believe a change in the style of recruiters like this individual would definitely be a low-hanging fruit to boost Nvidia's overall score.
