As with many companies, your career with Oracle is completely based on who you know and the network that you build. Hard work and stellar achievements will take you far, but you need to align with the correct individuals and ensure that someone is paying attention to your hard work and results.
As Oracle has grown, so has the red tape. I can only speak to working in the consulting arm of the business, but travel planning became less streamlined as additional policies were put in place to govern the corporation as a whole.
