New Grad Backend Engineer Interview Experience

Process

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks.

Reached out to recruiter on LinkedIn, he scheduled a call with me. Simple, 15-20 min call, chatted about some of my projects. Sent me a HackerRank, two coding questions and a bunch of multiple choice about cloud/web systems.

One HackerRank was LeetCode easy, the other was basically using the Python requests module to utilize an API to get some info from a service. After that I had a coding interview with an engineer, he didn't seem like he wanted to be there.

Kept bringing up how my degree wasn't computer science, even though much of my project experience was highly relevant. He also thought my code wasn't working even though it was and the error was a simple sign flip, instead he went on to grill me about some design flaws that weren't even there.

Coding question from the interview was not at all related to backend development, I thought he'd ask me to implement an API or something but it was basically just "find the K largest elements in a list".

He asked first what are some ways to implement it, and asked about the complexities of the different ways. Then for the implementation, he said to not use any functions in Python like sort() and to just implement the brute force solution.
