Software Developer Interview Experience - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Process

I had a very bad interview experience with Paycom. The development team and company culture initially led me to accept and sign their offer, causing me to decline two other opportunities. However, they revoked the offer at the end of the process, which was deeply disappointing, especially due to a confusing question in the phone interview. Even as an experienced developer in a competitive market, the treatment was not as good as a new graduate from college.

  1. I had a phone interview with a recruiter that was purely behavioral.
  2. I completed an online skill exam covering C# OOP and MySQL.
  3. I had two rounds of onsite interviews with a developer supervisor and manager, which included behavioral questions, discussions about my working experience, and some technical questions with handwritten coding.
  4. A recruiter called me to inquire about my salary range and confirm if I would commit to the offer.
  5. I accepted the offer and signed. The background check, drug test, and reference check followed. (Beware of their reference check; they request two of the five references be current or past managers/supervisors. Do not ask your current supervisor for a reference unless you are willing to risk having the offer revoked, which is what happened to me because I only had one past manager to provide. I am now facing the consequences of this decision.)
  6. After the background check, drug test, and reference check, the recruiter called to decline the offer, citing budget issues with transferring my working visa. (In the very beginning, the recruiter's questions about this were confusing and irresponsible; they never clearly asked about my working status or citizenship.)
