Senior Java Developer Interview Experience - Singapore, Singapore

Process

I applied online and got a telephonic interview for the first round. The interviewer asked one simple design question, one simple SQL question, and one simple algorithm question. I was able to answer all of them. Subsequently, I received an invitation for a face-to-face interview with other team members.

This is where the problem began. The face-to-face interview was horrible. The interviewer asked software development-related questions, and I provided answers. The issue wasn't with my responses. Instead, the interviewer focused on pointing out minor terminology mistakes. For example, when asked about unit testing, I explained the purpose of using unit tests and how we implemented them in our projects. Rather than engaging with the logical points, he fixated on my use of the word 'function' instead of 'method'. He immediately stated it was incorrect to use 'function' in Java because Java doesn't have functions. I was quite frustrated. While it's true Java doesn't have a 'function' keyword, that wasn't the core of my explanation about unit testing. He then moved on to service testing. I mentioned, 'When unit tests are run, we load an embedded database and perform integrated testing of our services against that DB.' He questioned, 'How do you load the database? Are you physically loading it or configuring it to load when JUnit runs?' I thought, 'Of course, who physically loads a database during a test?' This was the overall style of his questioning. It felt impossible to explain anything to him because he wasn't genuinely listening to my answers; he was solely trying to find any single mistake, even if it was purely terminological.

This interview completely wasted my time and effort.
