Site Reliability Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

Overall, I would mark the interview as easy. The only reason I mark it as average is because the questions, while easy on their own, cover a lot of different topics, which on its own adds complexity. Wide-spread knowledge in multiple topics such as programming and system administration is required.

I did three rounds of telephone interviews, which were very much the same. The first part would include a basic programming challenge (no complex algorithms) that would basically ensure that you have a good command of the language of choice (I did mine in PHP).

The second part would have a scenario of a piece of infrastructure and questions around it: How would you fix that? Why is that? How can you improve it? Questions of this sort.

I was not proceeded any further after the third round, which was quite surprising for me since I answered the questions correctly, but not as they expected me to (based on the feedback provided).

However, the overall experience of the process was very positive, as the communication I had with the recruiters was really good. As I said, I did get feedback on why they wouldn't proceed any further, and overall a really friendly and human approach from the recruitment team from the first contact till the very last.

Note: In between the 2nd and 3rd round of interviews, there was a gap of two weeks in the communication. I hope this could be helpful for others interviewing.

Questions

I wouldn't like to post the exact questions, as I don't remember them precisely. The first question would be a coding exercise on Hackerrank.com.

General system administration questions would involve either a given scenario or a process.
