Engineering Manager Interview Experience

Process

I applied online for an Engineering Manager role. Process was standard:

  • Initial recruiter call
  • Hiring manager chat
  • System design
  • Coding (frontend focused)
  • 2x cross-functional team interview
  • Another 30min call with hiring manager

The overall experience was a bit messy in my opinion for a couple of reasons:

  • There seemed to be some gaps between the recruiting team and the hiring team. For example, regarding the system design interview, the recruiter mentioned it would be related to a classic board game, but it turned out to be a regular system design task. Later, I was asked to be on-site at the NY office for coding. There were no clear instructions on whom I should contact upon arrival, and there was no one at the front desk when I got there. It also came as a surprise to the interviewer that I would be there in person. Additionally, the recruiter told me they would prepare a laptop for my coding interview, but the coordinator in office wasn't aware of that and I was glad I brought my own just in case.
  • Unclear what kind of candidate they're looking for: the hiring manager was nice and helpful in terms of explaining the team/role, but the two conversations we had were still a bit confusing to me. There was no question about my past technical and management experience, and the hiring manager seemed to prefer me leading the conversation and asking questions. Maybe that's the style and expectation, but I would expect a more constructive conversation.

The other gut feeling I got when talking with other team members is apparently they're having tons of projects ongoing in response to this fast-moving (and competitive) market. And as the company continues expanding quickly, I could totally see some chaos to align different stakeholders. No surprise I got rejected in the end, but it's still a confusing experience for me as I don't feel much interest in my past experience. Maybe I'm not a good fit anyway, but in that case, we could have saved 5 hours on both sides.
