Software Engineer Interview Experience - Prague, Czech Republic

Process

I received a call from the recruiter and was told the interview process here consists of three steps:

  • Online test
  • Two 1-hour online interviews/coding sessions with developers from California
  • Three 1-hour interviews with developers onsite in Prague
  • Final interview with a manager

Immediately, I hesitated whether to even go through with it, as this is a very "heavy" process compared to the competition in Prague (though it might be regular for California). However, the company looked interesting, and since they are just starting in Prague, it seemed like an opportunity.

The test consists of two coding questions and ten theoretical multiple-choice questions (A, B, C, D). The coding questions are of average difficulty, yet the description is quite confusing. I had to read it multiple times, which cost me some precious time, so beware.

I also recommend practicing with HackerRank before the interview, because even though it's a pretty good environment, it has some gaps.

Now, regarding the theoretical questions, this was a bit strange as most of them were not directly related to programming as much as to overall computer science – university material. A fresh graduate definitely has a better chance here than an experienced programmer.

I finished the online test, and they called me soon after to say I passed and could proceed with step two (the California calls). Great! We arranged the calls for the following week, but the day before, they called to say it was actually canceled as they "pushed the bar higher." Huh.

Well, it's a bit unprofessional to switch strategy that late, but I understand that perhaps they had a lot of people who performed better after me, pushing me down the scoreboard. Okay, fair enough.

Good luck.

Questions

I don't remember exactly, but one of the questions was related to binary/decimal conversion.
