Pros

Perks that other Silicon Valley startups also provide, like good snacks, free food, commuting benefits, and decent health insurance.

Sanjit is an inspiring and innovative leader.

Cons

Too many cons:

  • Company doesn't care about career growth for employees that work hard and go above and beyond.
  • Teams like Sales Ops need better leaders; new leadership is MIA. They literally slow down cross-functional teams that work with them.
  • People Team is even worse – they're so clueless and get defensive for every feedback they receive. People partners work against the employees and don't help with career development.
  • Poor work-life balance.
  • Low compensation.
  • Terrible middle management.
  • High attrition rate.
  • Low employee morale.
  • Existing employees are not valued, and the company thinks they can easily replace folks that leave.
  • New managers that are hired are often shooting in the dark.

I left for a much better startup for a leadership position where my contributions are valued and mental health is prioritized. Samsara would have never realized my leadership potential, even if I had stayed there for 5 more years.

Advice to Management

Change people team leadership if you want to retain your best employees.

Provide leadership opportunities and roles to ICs that exemplify leadership qualities.

This is common sense: Engaged and happy employees mean a better product and more customer obsession. Treat your employees the way you treat your customers.
