Pros
  • Opportunities for personal and professional growth
  • Perks like free food, car allowance, free laptop, and lots of office space
  • Team holidays and massive parties
Cons
  • Non-technical managers micromanaging technical employees.
  • Tech employees are treated like slaves.
  • Non-tech employees are respected more than engineers in a company built on software.
  • Too many acquisitions for tech staff to handle (and for non-tech staff to enjoy).
  • More growth opportunities for non-tech, which is a downward spiral for SAP.
  • High management-to-project ratio.
  • Focus is on the development of the business side while neglecting engineering.
  • Copying the "IBM" culture; employees acting like they are overly professional and formal when in reality managers are barking at techies because they themselves do not have a technical background.
Advice to Management
  • Read up on what software is and how it works.
  • Get a degree in software and then teach experienced software engineers how things are done.
  • Leave SAP and join a business consulting firm.
  • Listen to your technical employees; your company was made by techies!
  • If you love your techies, your company will grow. Non-techies are grasshoppers waiting for the next consulting firm to contact them.
  • Stop acquiring every company that manages to impress your non-technical staff.
  • Stop focusing on making those impressive-looking training videos and rather improve and upgrade that centuries-old software, or at least listen to those who know what security vulnerabilities exist in SAP.
