Above the ordinary employee, flat hierarchies are a myth. SAP is a highly hierarchical and bureaucratic corporation with corresponding political squabbling. Very annoying!
Rather top-down decisions: so-called leadership offsites take place every few weeks, and the simple worker bee is then informed about what's going on.
The management bases its authority primarily on reserving information sovereignty for itself (knowledge is power). SAP is generally not a transparent company (greenwashing aside), and neither is the Innovation Center, unfortunately.
The strategy has always been half-baked and changes very often. Projects are started hectically, only to be cut short again without plan or comment.
Most people have no idea about user-centered development processes and no interest in working with real people. Consequently, the projects are screwed up.
The innovation know-how is purely theoretical and rarely applied skillfully in practice. The fact is that we are years behind methodologically and technologically, even though we are an innovation center!
The people I know are quite resigned and have lost faith in leadership and strategy. No inspiration emanates from management at any hierarchical level. It doesn't seem like our leadership wants to carry us along. The only exception are the way-over-the-top speeches by Bill McDermott, which unfortunately do not come across as very credible.
The good salary is the #1 reason for many to stay. Turnover is quite high. Those who can afford it leave after 1-3 years.
