The video screening and subsequent chat with a Shopify engineer were very nice and promising. I had to write a compilable and working console app. The setup was already provided; I just needed to transfer the test data into code, implement the solution, and ensure it produced the correct output. I managed to complete it on time and handled the edge cases. The core task was: given some locations with a certain amount of certain goods, list all locations that can fulfill an order of specific products in a given quantity.
I didn't make it past this stage. I received a default reply: "We found a candidate who's better aligned."
The chat with the recruiter seemed to be going well. However, they mentioned at the beginning that I should have been located in one of the countries they hire from. This was stated early on. I then discussed my career and answered some questions they had. I'm unsure why I failed; perhaps I didn't send the right signals or didn't impress them. In any case, it felt like a waste of my time to wait three weeks for this interview after passing the tech screen. From what I've gathered, the main point was to prove I am a cultural fit and not a rude or unpleasant person. I didn't expect this to be a showstopper. Additionally, the recruiter tended to get distracted by other chats, which felt unprofessional.
