The interview experience with Shopify was overall positive. All individuals involved were friendly and professional.

The process was slow but steady, with next steps occurring at consistent intervals, taking approximately five weeks in total.

• A one-hour technical screening, involving a code pad, was scheduled within a week of my application submission. The code challenge was quite basic and completed quickly, allowing ample time for discussion with the interviewer.

• A one-hour "Life Story" interview with a recruiter followed about a week later. This largely consisted of a review of my resume. The conversation occasionally stalled on details of early career experiences, making more recent and relevant experiences feel somewhat rushed at the end. It is advisable to proactively guide the conversation toward more pertinent topics.

• A few days later, I was contacted to schedule the final interview, which lasted 3.5 hours plus breaks. This final interview comprised three parts:

  1. Technical problem solving: This involved a fairly standard application architecture question, framed as a Shopify feature. The question covered typical areas such as modeling, workflow, and data storage. Communicating effectively using a Google Doc instead of a whiteboard presented the primary challenge.
  2. Pair programming: A relatively straightforward algorithm challenge was presented, with requirements introduced in stages. I began solving the first stage with a simple approach but was stopped, as it would not meet later, unrevealed requirements. This was quite confusing. While the final scope of the problem was manageable, the session as a whole felt unproductive, with a mutual impression of sloppiness.
  3. Technical deep dive: This was a standard "show-and-tell" segment, requiring the explanation of an interesting project or concept. The interviewer was insightful and posed pertinent questions without being confrontational.
