Weekly 1-on-1s with assigned mentor. Bi-weekly 1-on-1s with your lead. They really want to make sure that you are on the right track. There's always a steady amount of work to do, and you can see your impact right away after your code gets approved and merged.
Although there is a good amount of work, not all of it is "cutting edge or problems with astounding impact." There is a fair bit of maintenance tasks, bug fixing, and user support issues as well.
Earlier, clearer, and more explicit performance metrics help employees smartly work towards goals, thereby improving themselves and their impact on the company.
