I interned twice at Shopify. Aside from all the perks (free meals, intern events, etc.) that you've come to expect from many of the better tech companies, the thing I really liked about Shopify was that they didn't distinguish between interns and full-time employees; you both got the same quality of work. Also, they were very willing to put you on new teams, even if you had no experience in that field.
I don't really have any cons about the company. Maybe the culture isn't for everyone, as the company is primarily younger people.
Maybe it's time to try raising the hiring bar for interns. Shopify's interview process is very easy compared to other companies in its league. It's mostly just culture fit.
There are two interviews. The first one is the "Life Story" with a recruiter, and the second is the Technical Interview with two developers. You only advance to the second one if you are chosen after the "Life Story" interview. They tell you in adva
I had one screening phone call with HR, then a video call with a person on the team. The last step was spending a day at the Shopify office for three more interviews plus a lunch with an employee.
The engineering track starts with a pair programming interview, followed by a life story interview, and finishes with a long interview that includes another pair programming task and a technical deep dive.
