Application-Project Engineer Interview Experience - Mumbai, India

Process

I received the interview call through a recruitment firm. The job would be under Siemens payroll. Project Engineer is the profile name.

I was dealing with PLC and SCADA development, but Siemens was expecting candidates with a Project Engineering background (panel engineering, IO list creation, instrumentation knowledge).

I had never done those specific tasks before. I had knowledge of Schneider PLC and SCADA systems, so questions were asked about Siemens systems.

I answered most of the PLC and SCADA-related questions. However, when it came to instrumentation, I was pretty weak in that area.

The interview questions were straightforward, focusing only on basic concepts rather than delving into depth.

Questions

PLC Questions

  • How to calculate cycle time?
  • Effect of the derivative term in PID?
  • How do you tune PID?
  • How do you implement time-based logic in a PLC? (e.g., an action that must happen every day at 11 PM)
  • What are the basic requirements before developing PLC applications?
  • How comfortable are you with IEC 61131-3 languages?
  • What is a watchdog timer?

SCADA Questions

  • What is a P&ID?
  • Draw all the symbols you are familiar with in P&ID and explain them.
  • How do you differentiate signals to a PLC in a P&ID diagram?

Instrumentation

  • 2-wire vs. 4-wire
  • Transducer vs. sensor
  • PLC vs. Safety PLC
  • How to do calibration?
  • RTD vs. TC

  • What would be the OP of an RTD signal range?
  • TC measurement ranges and different types.
  • What would be the OP of a TC and signal range?
