Cloud Solution Principal Interview Experience - Boston, Massachusetts

Process

I applied online and was contacted by a recruiter. After the initial discussion, they set up a 1-hour interview with the hiring manager.

The interview with the hiring manager went well. He mostly discussed my experience. It wasn't too technical of an interview. The recruiter told me that the feedback was positive.

Another recruiter contacted me a week later and said she would coordinate the next steps. I was invited for an in-person interview in Boston.

I am based out of Long Island, NY, and they wanted me to go to their Boston office for the interview. So, I asked them for assistance with travel and stay. The recruiter complicated it so much that, by the day before my interview, she said she would reschedule due to all the complications.

I had already made hotel reservations, etc. So, I told her that I would travel at my own expense.

The open position was for a Cloud Solutions Principal, and the job description was vague and generic. I was asked to present a project I am proud of, which I did. Then, there was a whiteboarding session in which I was given a use case to lay out a cloud transformation roadmap for a customer, which I believe I did efficiently.

The interviewing panel didn't feel like they were serious about hiring for the position. It felt more like they were trying to get free knowledge out of me. The whiteboarding was relatively technical in nature, but the questions were very vague.

They did not make me an offer, but they did give me detailed feedback. Some parts of the feedback felt made up, and the other parts seemed fair.

All in all, I lost $400 interviewing at a company that wasn't serious about hiring for the position (the position had been open for 4 months).

I would expect Slalom to do better with the interviewing process to live up to their Best Places to Interview and Best Places to Work awards.
