Senior Engineer I Interview Experience - Canada

Process

The first interview went well. The technical interview, however, was a joke.

If you're hiring people on the west coast of the U.S., why on earth would the engineer conducting your technical interview be in Barcelona?

English was not their first language, and the internet connection was terrible. The question was worded strangely and sent over Zoom chat, which has a character maximum and manipulates characters. I spent time just getting the problem into my editor in a way that wouldn't error. Why would they not just send a text file?

When I asked for clarification, they would just repeat the same oddly worded explanation, which did nothing to improve my understanding of the problem. I didn't fully understand the first question until I was three-quarters of the way through it. This meant there wasn't nearly enough time for the second question.

I have over a decade of experience with Ruby. I have no problem solving problems with it when they are clearly presented. This was a failure of Stripe's process, not of my abilities.
