Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

The recruiter and a C-suite executive I met during a minority conference call for underrepresented individuals spoke highly of the company, even to the point of gloating about a $500K salary. The only problem was the interview question was by no means reasonable. It was two parts in one, which felt like a sure-fire trap.

I was interviewed by a highly condescending engineer who micro-aggressed me repeatedly. I wished for time to think and breathe without him trolling me and breathing down my neck. He acted just like my previous micromanager. Why was he documenting my actions before I was even comfortable?

This was occurring in the midst of protests, COVID-19, and my wrongful discharge last year for no reason. It felt like I was walking into a trap.

When someone knows you have legendary talent and a superb résumé but still tells you, 'no promises,' that's a huge red flag. It suggests you can't trust your team to do right by you, especially given past turmoil and internal conflict. I'm expected to tolerate whatever they try to coerce me into or their refusal to support me without warning or reason. This was irrational.

The interviewer couldn't wait to throw me a curveball for his beloved 'Part II,' which I actually answered correctly under duress. What's with the missing filter and awkward syntax?

Seriously, you all attempt to make interviews impossible to pass, like those silly whiteboarding sessions for Google interviews that require an insane amount of code under pressure. Who wants to enslave their mind to such a degree that they must prepare for the impossible while living a real life surrounded by attractive women and real entrepreneurs?

Let me see your work then. Where are your blog posts, open-source libraries developed independently outside of any company or framework? Where is your activism and community support for brown people and females? Zero!

Sorry, not sorry, and no thank you!
