The phone screen was a system design interview.
The onsite interview included:
- A behavioral discussion
- A manager chat
- A technical discussion
- A coding session
- A system design session
The questions were overall average, nothing too hard.
I found two of my interviewers arrogant. They made snarky comments, and I overall had a negative experience.
I decided to turn down the offer.

Free meals & drinks
Cons: Toxic culture. Managers don't know how to manage but enjoy criticizing, threatening, and torturing their direct reports.
Not friendly to software engineers. Communication skills and English language proficiency are more important than anything else.

Opportunity to make a big impact, but the process is getting worse

Pros: Stripe runs its teams very lean, which means each engineer has a lot of impact on their product and its users.
Teammates are almost universally great: kind, empathetic, and always competent.
Cons: As the company grows, the process is growing too, along with bureaucracy. The appetite for risk is decreasing. This is making it harder to ship features, but I think we'll figure things out in the next year.
