Process

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks.

tl;dr; interview process at Synthesia was one of the best I ever had; really well-prepared one, transparent and with enough space for questions; also, the technical task was pure fun!

It wasn't the shortest process I was in, it had five or six stages if I remember correctly. It was quite quick, though, once started. It took me two weeks to go from the screening call to the offer. The longest waiting period I had was for the initial call with the recruiter, I think the first available slot was in three weeks from the moment I received the email after sending my CV, which seemed a bit far in the future.

The take home task, which for me is usually a litmus test for an interview process, was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Seriously, I solved it with pleasure and learned a lot along the way. Interestingly, as a person with mostly the frontend background who applied to the fullstack position, I got a backend-oriented task. That made perfect sense and was extra challenging in a good way.

I could also choose any technology I was comfortable with, nobody required me to write it in Python, which is what Synthesia uses on the backend. I chose JavaScript on Node.js that I know well, so I could focus on solving the business problem. It was also quite short task and surprisingly precisely estimated - they told me it usually takes people four hours and it took me exactly that. Just right for a Saturday afternoon :)

All conversations I had along the way with different people were concrete, professional and genuinely interesting! Everyone was super nice and friendly. Expectations were clearly set for every stage, so I could prepare upfront and feel comfortable. Also, every stage made sense to me, there was no BS talk, so I never felt I'm wasting my time. It was nice that everyone gave me time for questions during the call. People were also very responsive via email.

The platform used for managing the interview process was also very helpful! It presented where I am in the process and what are my next steps, but also provided me with A LOT of useful information about the company history, its culture, ways of working, perks and benefits, etc. Overall, I could feel I got the company know quite well before accepting the offer. That was very helpful with making my decision.

Questions

How I would design a system that can help with moderation of posted videos. Whether I'd extend an existing Slack-based workflow, build some custom solution, or buy and integrate some off-the-shelf solution. It was a high-level question to test how I'm breaking down complex problems, making decisions, and iterating on solutions.
