Process

TLDR: After taking the coding assessment, I received a response stating they "did not see any code" and will not be moving forward.

I was contacted through Indeed Prime by a recruiter, who then went dark after I offered my available times. The Indeed Prime representative emailed the recruiter, with me cc'd. Finally, the recruiter sent out a code challenge that was poorly explained. It was described as two tasks to be completed on Codility within 120 minutes.

The first question comprised two parts: Create a GUI with a search field, submit button, and image display areas. The second was to integrate it with the Giphy API and allow searches. Bonus points were awarded for paginating the results.

Approximately 20 minutes were spent setting up the API and obtaining keys. The rest was fairly straightforward, and I completed it in 1 hour and 30 minutes, leaving 30 minutes to spare. I zipped my file and submitted it.

After submitting, it took me to the second task, which I was unaware of. Fortunately, I had 30 minutes to complete it. An hour would have been ideal, but I wasn't expecting another challenge.

It was a standard array problem, nothing too difficult. I raced against time, completing it in about 50 lines of code. I did not have time to account for edge cases, so I submitted it as is. I received a confirmation screen and moved on.

Two days passed with no response, so I sent an email asking for feedback. This is the response I received verbatim:

"I did not see any code. Unfortunately, we will not be moving ahead with your application at this point in time."

Bear in mind, I missed a family get-together for this assessment, and that's the response I received. No effort was made to resolve the "did not see any code" issue. Clearly, they do not care about who they are hiring. I suspect they are just testing the waters with no intention of hiring anyone.

I will never apply to work for Tesla again due to their lack of effort and disrespect towards candidates. When another reviewer mentioned that they do not respect their candidates, I initially thought they were simply unlucky, but now I understand their sentiment.

Do not waste your time with them. There are better companies out there that genuinely care for their candidates.

Then, make an API request to Giphy and implement their search functionality.

After that, here's another coding challenge to do, which you probably won't have any time to complete.
