Pros

Great corporate company and culture (truly lives by the "value wheel" shown on all store-associate aprons).

Technology interviews are relatively relaxed compared to others in the industry.

Fully remote for IT and relaxed (this varies by team, though).

Gifted stock (stock vesting) is, to my knowledge, available at senior engineer and above on the technology side.

Stock purchase program offers a 15% discount, which has been great.

Overall low turnover on teams, especially at staff and above (I've only heard of one staff-level and above engineer leave in my 6 years).

Management generally "stays out our way". Micromanaging is very uncommon from what I've experienced.

Relatively easy to transfer to different technology teams inside the company.

Cons
  • Pay feels about average or below average for IT (much lower than a technology-focused company).

However, the pace and relaxed nature here I feel make up for that.

  • The success sharing (profit sharing) we get each 6 months usually equates to about a paycheck, which feels lackluster compared to bonuses at other companies (we have no yearly bonus).

  • Promotion opportunities once Staff are limited to a manager or principal track, both of which have very small openings.

  • 2 years are required in each role now for a promotion (e.g., seniors need at least 2 years to get to Staff).

  • As of Q4 2024, management requires all corporate employees to have 1 store day per quarter, which might be uncomfortable for some (personally speaking, there's a reason why I'm in IT haha).

Advice to Management

Pay your top talent well or risk losing them to technology-focused companies.
