Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - Australia

Process

I did the interview in July 2024.

The overall process is quite similar to what others have described. My personal experience:

  • Average questions; both the problem-solving (algorithmic) and system design questions were not too difficult.
  • There was a non-standard system design question where the interviewer spent 15 minutes describing an existing system with lots of components and asked where the bottleneck could be. I think I didn't do very well on this one.
  • There were two supposedly onsite interviews, but when I arrived, no one greeted me. Both the recruiter and interviewers were not in the office that day, and I just went to their office to make a Zoom call, LOL. Big thumbs down.

Ended up being down-leveled from what I applied for without a clear reason. I tried to negotiate, but the recruiter didn't get back to me. Overall, a bad experience.

Questions

One of the onsite system design questions is: Given an existing system with lots of components, where can the bottleneck be?
