Software Engineer Intern Interview Experience - Quebec, Canada

Process

I got the interview on campus from a career fair. They asked on the spot a simple question about data structures: when and why to use a hash map over a linked list.

Following that, the next day was a one-on-one interview. Two questions were asked:

  1. What is a BST and write a real method using any language to implement a BST. (This was a fair question, and a simple one).
  2. Given two nodes on a tree, find the deepest common ancestor. (This was also a fair question, and the solution is actually quite easy if you know what you're doing).

Then, following that, I also received a "homework" assignment. Basically, it involved reading a bunch of user information (name, gender, age) from an input text file and letting the user sort it according to age, gender, or name. I used a bucket sort for gender, quicksort for age, and a dictionary sort for name.

Questions

Find the deepest common ancestor of two nodes.
