My interview experience with TripAdvisor was, hands down, the worst I have ever had.
I've spoken with others who have interviewed with them, and while my experience may have been an anomaly, it was very negative for me.
I spoke with four different managers, and all four interviews were technical in nature. There were no personality interviews asking about my experience or what I was looking for in a company. Furthermore, no part of the interview process informed me about the company or even offered a tour of the office. The questions were basic, "build a b-tree" type queries, and that was it.
I should have known it was going to be a bad day when I arrived and my name was misspelled on the folder they gave me.
I was escorted to a small office for the interviews. In between interviews, I had to wait there for about 20-30 minutes for the next interviewer. This happened between all four interviews. The HR representative occasionally stopped in and told me, "we haven't forgotten about you."
One interviewer was very disrespectful because he was playing on his iPhone while I was doing my technical exercises on the whiteboard.
I also waited after the fourth interviewer for another half hour, awaiting the last interviewer who never showed up. I was told by the HR person that "he was too busy to do this," and that was it.
The interview process started at 9:30 AM and ended at 4:00 PM, with no break for lunch. I understand that companies are not obligated to provide lunch, but you would think they would at least allow a half hour to go out and grab a bite.
Overall, it was a very disorganized and slightly disrespectful process, with a conveyor belt feel to it.
The technical interviews were very in-depth, on par with Google or Microsoft. This is what you would expect from a tech start-up (i.e., not the reason for the negative review). Make sure you study up on trees and hash tables.
Given four coins that could have any value (i.e. $0.17, $0.07, $0.05, $0.01), come up with an algorithm that figures out the fewest number of coins to get that value.
Given a flat text file that contains a range of IP addresses that map to a location (e.g. 192.168.0.0-192.168.0.255 = Boston, MA), come up with an algorithm that will find a city for a specific IP address if a mapping exists.
