Process

I never formally applied to Uber. The recruiters reached me at CVPR conference and somehow found my contact information later and followed up. Eventually, I decided to interview with them, and the recruiters set up the rest of the process. One phone interview on coding and data structure, and then an on-site interview in Pittsburgh. The phone interview went smoothly, and my interviewer was nice. My recruiter was also really nice and helpful. I volunteered to give a research talk on my interview day; they didn't require it. People who showed up at my talk were unprofessional; they asked so many detailed questions that they did not let me present all my slides. They were stubborn in their questions, even when they were clearly wrong. During my talk, I assessed the general knowledge level of the people in the room in optimization and computer vision. I was already disappointed in the team; they work on computer vision, and they didn't know how a graph cut algorithm works! Next, the interview was the machine learning and computer vision interview. Only one interview was assigned to assess this skill, which is the most important skill for the job! Anyway, my interviewer had a bachelor's degree in robotics, and I was not impressed by his questions at all. They should not assess the skills and knowledge of a candidate with a PhD degree and 7 years of research experience in one interview run by a recent college grad! During this interview, I had to teach my interviewer about some concepts! Then, there were two general interviews, mostly behavioral questions and talk about my research, which could have been condensed given that I had already given a research talk. Anyway, the last two interviews were coding interviews on a whiteboard, which went smoothly, and I completed the tasks. After the interview, I knew I had crushed the interview, but I felt unwelcomed by some of the junior team members. Also, they have not reimbursed me for my meal purchases/Uber rides, yet! If you don't live in Pittsburgh, I really don't recommend bothering yourself with the on-site interview, especially if you hold a PhD degree and you have offers from other big tech companies and you possess a leadership personality. The team just wants to show off how "talented" they are; they don't welcome new ideas.
