PPTO (Protected Paid Time Off)

If you get sick or a life event happens and don't want to come in to work, you can use PPTO (which accrues pretty quickly) and get paid for your time off work, while also not penalizing you for call-outs.

The health insurance includes free virtual care for many things, such as psychiatry, urgent care, and primary care. It has come in handy more than a few times.

After 3 months worked, associates receive a 10% discount. This includes groceries between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve rush period, but excludes alcohol.

Fitness Pass includes lower-cost memberships for LA Fitness and Planet Fitness.

Easy to get overtime pay.

Supervisors are good at listening.

Cons

Discipline (coaching) should have warnings between tiers. Somebody who has been cleaning up their act for a while should not be fired for a lapse in judgment close to the end of the discipline fall-off period.

Older coworkers can be ageist and dismissive of younger associates.

Managers are very gung-ho about discipline and don't understand the idea of warning shots.

$14.00/hour is just insulting. Walmart can afford to pay better, but the shareholders are more important.

Health insurance has many plan exclusions, and they try to use a Center of Excellence program to avoid responsibility for more serious issues.

Advice to Management

Store Management:

Be consistent with discipline. My last manager was notorious for firing people on the spot for swearing, accidental or not.

Be fair about weekends. Nobody should be getting full-time hours with weekdays only. I suggest you rotate weekends so everyone can get a chance to have a full day off with their family. (Or add a weekend premium.)
